At Hickey Law Firm, P.A., we have been blogging about cruise ship rape and sexual assault for the past decade. Last month we published a blog post, titled “Recent Lawsuits against Cruise Companies Blame Bartenders for Sexual Assault”, which focuses on cruise ship bartenders’ roles in many recent cases.
In the blog mentioned above, we discussed the rash of cruise ship bartenders which have been accused of sexually assaulting passengers aboard cruise ships. These incidents include a 16-year-old girl who accused a bartender aboard an Avalon Waterways cruise ship of raping her, and a woman who is suing SeaDream Yacht Club for $25 million after allegedly being raped by a bartender as she cruised on one of the company’s ships.
This trend is nothing new. As can be seen in the following news report, in 2010 a bartender, named Hery Krispiyanto, was arrested on allegations that he raped a 14-year-old girl the year before, while working aboard the Carnival Freedom cruise ship.
According to the report, Krispiyanto is accused of coming up behind the teen, forcing her into an employee’s only section of the cruise ship, and raping her.
Despite numerous blogs, articles, and media exposés which have sounded the alarm about the trend, many passengers are still unaware of the situation. While it is impossible for passengers to predict which cruise ship crew members, if any, are likely to commit violence against them, there are precautions that passengers can take to reduce their chances of becoming victims of sexual violence. We have published some of these tips here.
Additionally, if you or your loved one are ever victimized aboard a cruise ship, be sure to follow these steps immediately.
