A man from Florida City fell overboard from the Carnival Victory cruise ship earlier this week, as the ship sailed close to Cuba. After searches both by the ship itself and the U.S. Coast Guard, the search has been called off.

The missing man, Brandon Paul, fell overboard at about 3:00 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

According to a report on the incident by NBC News, Coast Guard search and rescue mission coordinator Chris Eddy said:  "Making the choice to suspend a search is never an easy decision and one the Coast Guard doesn't take lightly, and despite our best efforts, we were unable to reunite Paul with his family."

Carnival, too, issued a statement which read: "Carnival's CareTeam is providing support to the guest's traveling companions and we extend our utmost care and concern to our guest's loved ones during this very difficult time."
