34 year old Ronald Sagum Ramirez was charged with sexually assaulting a woman on December 12, 2017, while sailing on a cruise ship. The Otago Daily Times now reports that the charges against Ramirez have been dropped.

The report indicates that Ramirez was due to appear at trial in Dunedin District Court this month, the case’s prosecutor, Catherine Ure, informed the court this week that the prosecution would not offer evidence relating to the charge. Judge Emma Smith then dismissed the charge.

No official word was given as to the prosecution’s decision. It is possible that the accuser’s inability to appear in court played a role. The complainant is currently in New York, and was unable to return to New Zealand for the trial, offering instead to appear by video.
