In 2015, 46-year-old cruise ship worker Yovany Suazo-Batiz was arrested by the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. He was accused of initiating inappropriate sexual contact with a teenage boy aboard the cruise ship on which he worked.
Suazo-Batiz was accused of following the boy into the ship’s sauna, and sexually assaulting him there. After the assault the victim told his father, who then detained Suazo-Batiz and alerted authorities.
Every year hundreds of cruise ship passengers report having been sexually assaulted during their vacations. The case of Suazo-Batiz is disturbingly typical; the majority of cruise ship sexual assaults are committed by crew members against women and children.
