An 8-year-old girl has been transported to a Miami area hospital, after falling from a cruise ship Saturday morning.
The girl reportedly fell at least two stories from the ship, resulting in injuries which left the child in critical condition. The ship was at Port Miami at the time of the incident. It is not clear if the ship was docked when the girl fell from it, or if the child fell into the water or onto the ground.
Children have often been the victims of cruise ship related injuries. For example, a recent NBC News exposé revealed that a striking percentage of cruise ship sexual assault victims are under the age of 18.
Cruise companies also have a spotty record of protecting its youngest passengers in and around pool areas. Despite years of calls for major cruise lines to station life guards at onboard swimming pools, most cruise companies refused to do so until this year when Royal Caribbean announced that its ships would provide life guards. This move came after many children drowned and nearly drowned aboard the company’s ships.
Carnival Cruise Lines continues to refuse to provide lifeguards.
