2012 and 2013 both saw tragic and shocking cruise ship related news at the beginning of the new years. In 2012 it was the sinking of the Costa Concordia. 2013 saw the Carnival Triumph break out in a disabling fire. Following the patter of the two previous years, Royal Caribbean is making headlines at the beginning of 2014 with a 600+ passenger and crew outbreak of norovirus.
The situation has caused the online news website The Wire to dub this time of year “cruise ship disaster season.” This moniker is fitting, giving the amazing amount of cruise disasters the wintertime has seen over the past couple of seasons. If 2014′s winter continues to follow the examples set forth by 2012 and 2013, perhaps there really is something to this “disaster season” concept after all.
