The United States Customs and Border Protection are finding new ways to catch criminals with warrants out for their arrest. On Saturday, June 11, 2011 and Sunday, June 12, 2011, two individuals with warrants were arrested prior to heading on a cruise vacation from the port in Galveston, Texas.
Ramona White, a 45 year old woman, was arrested Saturday by Customs and Border Protection. White had a warrant from the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office for larceny. White was turned over to the Galveston County Police Department before being transferred to San Antonio.
The second person arrested in the Galveston cruise terminal this past weekend prior to boarding a cruise ship was Derrick Carter, a 31 year old man from North Carolina who was arrested Sunday. Carter was apprehended for to a warrant for absconding and sexual assault of a child in Killeen, Texas. After being arrested by the Customs and Border Protection, Carter was transported back to Killeen.
Both Ramona White and Derrick Carter were apprehended with the help of the National Crime Information Center database.
The National Crime Information Center (NCIC) is the United States’ central database for tracking crime-related information. Since 1967, the NCIC has been maintained by the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Criminal Justice Information Services Division, and is interlinked with similar systems that each state maintains. Data is received from federal law enforcement agencies, state and local law enforcement agencies, as well as tribal law enforcement agencies, railroad police, and non-law enforcement agencies, such as state and federal motor vehicle registration and licensing authorities.
Cruise ship passengers never know who will be standing next to them in the buffet line or what type of people their family will encounter while lounging on the pool deck. It is important that law enforcement agencies, like Customs and Border Protection, are vigilant, just as they were this past weekend, and protect the thousands of law abiding passengers hoping to enjoy their vacation on a cruise.
