On Sunday, June 19, 2011, a male passenger onboard the Norwegian Spirit cruise ship fell off of the boat into the water.  The man, who has yet to be identified, went overboard around 8:00 pm local time near Jesuit Bend, Louisiana.   The ship was traveling along the Mississippi River after just leaving the port of New Orleans about three hours earlier.  The Norwegian Spirit was about to begin a seven-night cruise to the Western Caribbean.

Cruise ship employees were able to rescue the man who was injured in the fall.  Arrangements were made to remove the man from the ship for medical treatment.  It has not been determined how the man went overboard or what caused his fall.

Over the years, there have been numerous instances when either passengers or crew members have fallen or jumped overboard.  A popular cruise website, Cruise Junkie, reports that so far in 2011, 13 people have gone overboard on a cruise ship.  In 2010, that number was 19, which was less than the 25 individuals who fell off a cruise ship in 2009.
