Proudly Representing Cruise Ship Cases in Miami, Nearby Areas of Florida and Nationwide

According to the Sacramento Bee, an employee of the Celebrity Cruises’ Constellation that was found with child pornography on his personal computer was sentenced Friday, December 20 after pleading guilty to one count of receiving child pornography. The 34-year-old native of Chico, California worked as an audiovisual manager on the Constellation. Since August of 2010, the perpetrator had a residence in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but he spent most of his time abroad on the Constellation.

The FBI investigation began in the summer of 2010 when a Chico resident received a personal computer at an estate sale which the seller believed to be broken. The Chico resident was a computer technician and managed to power up the computer which contained 450 images and 250 videos of 44 different children engaging in sexual acts. The computer was turned over to the FBI. Soon after the discovery, the perpetrator was preparing to leave the U.S. for Mexico and Panama. Transcriptions of the perpetrators online chat-room conversations revealed that he often paid for sex with children in Mexico.

Thankfully, the FBI located the perpetrator in San Diego before he had the opportunity to leave for Central America on the Constellation. The perpetrator’s laptop on the vessel also contained child pornography. U.S. District Judge Garland E. Burrell Jr. sentenced the perpetrator to eight years in prison on Friday, December 20.

I Was Sexually Assaulted On A Cruise Ship And I Need An Attorney

It is tragic that the cruise line industry has become a safe haven for sexual assault. According to the Cairns Post, an elderly couple was forced off of a cruise ship and left onshore without homeward transportation. The cruise ship’s medical crew thought it in the best interest of the couple’s safety to abandon them. The couple’s nephew posted their experience on social media where its users shared the story over 5,200 times, bringing much needed attention to the cruise line’s actions.

The 78-year-old woman and her husband were on Celebrity Cruises’ Celebrity Millennium when they docked in Cairns, Australia. The husband decided to go site-seeing on land while the spouse remained on the ship. The husband had been gone a long time without calling and the spouse was lost on the incredibly large ship looking for her room. The vessel’s medical crew found the spouse crying over the frustration of finding her husband and cabin.

The husband then returned to the ship where he and his spouse were told they were not allowed back on. A spokeswoman for Celebrity Cruises said, “since we were concerned for [the woman’s] safety and wellbeing while aboard the ship, particularly in a cabin with its own balcony, we felt it was necessary to disembark her.”

I Received Poor Medical Treatment Aboard A Cruise Ship. Is The Doctor Or Cruise Line Responsible?

Rather than deal with the issue at hand and locate the woman’s cabin and husband, the cruise line simply stated that it would be unsafe for the couple to remain aboard. How could abandoning the couple on shore without transportation home be in the best interest of their “safety and wellbeing?” If this story is familiar to you and you have been wronged by cruise line negligence, contact us and we can help. Everyone knows that it can be challenging, if not downright impossible, for individuals with moderate financial resources to file a legitimate lawsuit against a large, well-funded corporate entity and hope to come out of the legal proceedings as the winner. Such is the case with many people who fall victim to injury or criminal activity onboard cruise ships during their vacations. There are myriad cases of cruise passengers being severely injured during a cruise or suffering some other kind of mishap such as theft and even physical or sexual assault. Many of these passengers have attempted to bring litigation against the cruise line responsible for their plight only to be faced with a tremendous legal battle that they see no chance of winning because of the resources that cruise lines have at their disposal.

The unfortunate truth is that these individuals who are just looking for justice are often psychologically intimidated by such resources compared to the perceived lack thereof on their own side. As a result they often drop their case against the cruise line or give up before they even have a chance to file suit simply because they see it as a David versus Goliath endeavor but with no chance of actually beating Goliath. But these individuals are often unaware that it is typically not the amount of money that the litigants have at their disposal that makes them a contender in a legal fight but rather the quality of their representation.

Bringing litigation against a cruise line is not an endeavor that just any attorney can undertake. Maritime law and other legal areas that are specific to the cruise industry are extremely complex and as such they require counsel that is knowledgeable and experienced. Just because a law firm charges a high rate does not mean they know the laws that are applicable to a case involving a cruise line. It is a very specific area of law that require a very specific type of lawyer and taking the time to research and find such representation is time well spent on the part of any plaintiff looking to sue a cruise line company.
